The Western Australian election … interesting food for thought

Last Saturday’s State election in Western Australia provides some interesting food for thought.

As the boundaries and voting system stand, it seems that Labor will win 41 of the 59 seats and comfortably govern over an Opposition comprising 13 Liberals and five Nationals.

If, however, seats were allocated on a genuine statewide percentage basis, things would be considerably different: Labor 25 seats, Liberals 19, Greens 5, Nationals 3, One Nation 3, and Others 4.

Labor would still rule the roost, with 30 or the 59 seats as long as it kept the five Greens on side. The Coalition would boast 25 seats as long as it had the admittedly fractious three One Nation members on side.

And then there’d be four others if anyone should waver. Very interesting indeed ... and that's not to mention the Upper House.

Mark McGowan ... WA's Premier Elect.
