WHAT'S IN A NAME: 25 FEBRUARY 2019
Amaroo
Amaroo Road provides a link between the Mitchell Highway, just outside of Molong towards Orange, and the Escort Way, very close to the village of Borenore.
Amaroo Shire was gazetted in 1906 and was adjacent to Molong Municipality. It comprised the counties of Gordon, Wellington and Narromine.
The shire's abolition was accounced in the NSW Government Gazette of 8 December 1950. It was amalgamated with the former Molong Municipality to form the Shire of Molong.
One source (http://www.grandpapencil.net/) says the name means 'a beautiful place' in the local Aboriginal dialect.
Other suggestions for meanings of the name include 'along the way', 'plain with a river', 'make your abode here' and 'remain here'.
A location called Amaroo is included on the Mitchell Highway signpost but there is precious little evidence for it in reality.
Next week: Kite St, Molong
