Top of the state — Molong No 3 Pennant side takes out the flag at Yamba

The Molong Bowling Club’s Number 3 Pennant side headed off some persistent teams to take out the flag at Yamba over the weekend.

In a nice coincidence they won the final yesterday (1 August), the same day that they won the No 4 Pennant flag in 2011.

Molong played Scone in the first game and were victorious 63-53.

Their second game was against Manning Point and the Molong boys were far too good and again victorious.

The third game against St Johns Park was to be a hard and pressure-draining game, but the Molong side scored a convincing win.

Molong then played Kempsey in the semi-final and raced out to a 40-point lead, taking the match 83-41.

The final was played yesterday and the team was nervous as the side they were to play, Malua Bay, had beaten them by four shots the last time they met.

But it was the Molong boys who were the victors, with a final scoreline of  54-53.

Mixed-pairs championship

One game played on Saturday, with John Beatty and Sarah Fessey against Toby Lyons and Margot Brown.

John and Sarah raced away to be 19-7 after 13 ends, with the two holding on to win 31-20 after 25 ends. Well done, John and Sarah, who now progress to play John Bennett and Cindy Earl in the next round.

All bowlers, please remember that  it is your responsibility to pay your nomination and green fees.

Prestige Triples sponsored by Molong Real Estate

This event is listed for the 21 August but at this stage we only have three teams to contest the event.

Total prize money is $1575 with win dividends for first, second and third, and other prizes throughout the day.

If this event is not filled by the close of play on Sunday 14 August, the event will be cancelled again.

Wednesday social bowls

The weather conditions again were not good for playing bowls but this did not deter a small band of thrill seekers who braved the cold conditions to have one game of pairs and one game of triples.

The games were played with the normal Wednesday attitude of fun and laughter on the green.

In the pairs game, John Beatty and Sarah Fessey played Ted Salcole and Tom Dean in a lead-up game for John and Sarah who were to play their mixed pairs on Saturday.

In the triples game, Ted Ward, Strapper and Ramiz Halep played Ken Nicholls, Arthur Ford and Mal Orringe. This game was great, with the good bowlers mixing with the most senior bowlers. The score didn’t reflect how the game evolved, end after end, with both sides taking shots away from their opponents.

The results were Ted Salcole and Tom Dean 17 defeated Sarah Fessey and John Beatty 11; Ted Ward, Strapper and Ramiz Halep 20 defeated Ken Nicholls, Arthur Ford and Mal Orringe 12.

Overall winners were Ted Ward, Strapper and Ramiz Halep.

Runners up were John and Sarah Fessey.

Touchers were Strapper, Tom Dean and Sarah Fessey.

The raffles were not drawn due to the Wednesday bowls being cancelled throughout the month because of inclement weather.

Everyone was a winner with all the prizes being won, as a result of the players’ name draw, by Janelle Fessey.

Thanks to our team Ken Nicholls and John Beatty for organising the Wednesday social bowls.

With winter into its final stage we hope to see more bowlers on the green. Come and support the club and enjoy the friendship that develops over a game of bowls.

If we don’t have bowlers and members supporting the facility we don’t have a club and it would be a shame to see the club doors close forever.

The AGM is soon approaching and we urge all members to be there and hear how things are progressing. What could you do to support the club?

Saturday jackpot bowls

There were no games played on Saturday due to the championship game being played.

 The jackpot stands at $219.

If you wish to play Lawn Bowls please contact the club after 1pm Monday to Friday or come and enjoy a great day on the greens at Wednesday or Saturday social bowls.

Darts

Saturday darts were played from 1pm with a small group of enthusiastic players.

Games of singles were played, with one newcomer who took out second place.

The winner was Peter Hamilton and runner-up was Ted Salcole.

The meat tray was won by Arthur Ford.

Next darts will start at 1pm on 6 August. New players are welcome and should be at the club to register by 12.30pm.

Badge draw

The Saturday badge draw was not won, with holder of drawn by badge number 21, Bob Hamilton, not present at the club, as he was in the side playing bowls in Yamba.

Next week the badge draw is worth $400. You must be present at the club to win when the draw takes place around 8pm.

If you are not a financial member of the Molong Bowling Club your number will be removed from the barrel. Once your subscription is paid your number will be replaced.
