Yeoval Eagles topple Blayney Rams to set up enticing clash with Magpies

As already reported (molong.com.au/sport/news/2017/05-17/rugby20/rugby20.html), Molong Magpies defeated a depleted Condoblin Rams 83-21 in a very one-sided GrainCorp Cup Central Division contest at the Molong Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon.

In other GrainCorp Cup matches this weekend:

Central Division

Yeoval Eagles defeated Blayney Rams 20-10 at Yeoval. CSU Aggies had the bye.

Blayney had been previously undefeated this season, so this represents something of a surprise, though probably not to Jock Haynes, Molong Online’s football expert. He reckons that the Eagles are always slow starters who build up in intensity as the season progresses.

Anyway, it sets up a tantalising contest next Saturday when the Magpies travel to Yeoval. In the other match, Blayney are at home to Aggies and should win without too many problems. Condoblin Rams have the bye.

Right now, Blayney and Molong share the lead in the Central Division with 15 competition points each, though Blayney has the edge on percentages. Hovering not too far away are Yeoval on 10. Condoblin and Aggies languish at the bottom with 5 points apiece.

Northern Division

Wellington 25 defeated Coolah 20 at home in a bottom-of-the-table clash. Narromine travelled to Trangie and won convincingly, 47-3.

Geurie had the bye, and hence lost the ladder lead to Narromine who now have 19 points and remain undefeated. Reigning Premiers Trangie are placed third on 9 competition points, and do seem to be struggling a bit. Wellington (5) and Coolah (1) make up the rest.

Next Saturday sees Geurie travel to Trangie and Narromine at home to Wellington. Coolah have the bye.

Southern Division

Cootamundra won 36-21 away at West Wyalong. Harden forfeited to Temora, while Grenfell had the bye.

This leaves Cootamundra clearly on top of the ladder with 19 points, Temora in second with 15, followed by Grenfell (11), West Wyalong (5) and Harden (0).

Next weekend, Cootamundra are home to Temora in a top-of-the-table clash, Harden travel to Grenfell. West Wyalong have the bye.

Southern Division Women

Temora 43 defeated Harden 5; West Wyalong pipped Cootamundra 39-30.

At this early stage of the GrainCorp competitions, it seems a few teams are struggling for player numbers.

Canowindra and Coonabarabran have already retired, and Condoblin could only muster a dozen for the trip to Molong. Let’s hope that Harden’s forfeit yesterday isn’t a bad sign for the GrainCorp newcomers.
